Ram Raj – the description of “Heaven on Earth”

Ram Raj – the description of “Heaven on Earth” :
When Rama ascended his throne, the three worlds rejoiced and all suffering was ended. No-one bore enmity to another; Rama's glory destroyed all disharmony. Everyone was devoted to duty, each according to his own caste and stage of life. The people followed the path of the Vedas, each true to his position in life. In this way all were happy and there was no fear or suffering. In Rama’s Kingdom there was no disease, natural disasters or problems with wild animals. All men loved one another and each performed their allotted duty according to the precepts of the Vedas. The four pillars of dharma (truth, purity, compassion and charity) filled the world. No-one even dreamt of sin. Men and women alike were deeply devoted to worshipping Rama and were qualified for final beatitude. There was no premature death, no-one suffered and all were beautiful and healthy. No-one was poor, sorrowful or in distress. No-one was stupid and of lesser merit. All were free of pride, pious and full of virtue. All men and women were clever and accomplished. Everyone recognized the merits of others and were learned and wise.

Everyone showed gratitude and were not deceitful in any way.
Listen, O king of the birds, (the narrator is the crow, Bhusundi, and Garuda is listening), during the reign of Rama, there was not a creature in this world, animate or inanimate, that was liable to any of the sufferings attributable to time, past actions, personal temperament and character. Raghupati was the ruler of the whole world with its seven oceans. This lordship meant nothing to him, whose body contained myriads of universes. Those who has realised the infinite greatness of the Lord, feel helpless to describe it. But even those, O king of the birds, who have realised the greatness of the Lord, are very fond of the stories of his exploits. The greatest of sages, who have subdued their senses, declare that knowledge of these exploits is the reward of knowing his greatness. Even the serpent king, and Saraswati (the Godess of learning) could not describe the happiness and riches of Rama’s kingdom. Men and women alike were generous and beneficent. All were devoted to the feet of the Brahmans. Every husband was pledged to a vow of monogamy and the wives were devoted to their husbands in thought, word and deed. The danda was only seen in the hands of ascetics and division was only seen amongst dancers in a dance troupe. In Rama's kingdom one heard only the command, “Conquer your senses” and not “Conquer your enemies”. Trees in the forest blossomed and bore fruit throughout the year. Elephants and lions lived together. Birds and animals of every description forgot their natural animosities and the love for each other grew.

In the forests the birds sang and the animals moved around without fear and enjoyed themselves. There was a cool, soft and fragrant breeze. The bees hummed as they collected honey. Creepers and trees dropped honey to those who asked for it.
Cows gave as much milk as men wanted.
The crops of the earth were abundant. Even in the Silver Treta Yuga, the conditions of the Golden Age of Satya Yuga appeared. Conscious of the fact that the Ruler of the earth was none other than the Universal Spirit, the mountains brought forth their mines containing jewels of every description. Every river flowed with cool, clear, pleasant tasting water that bought joy. The oceans kept within their boundaries and scattered jewels on their shores for men to gather. Ponds were all thick with lotuses and all ten points of the compass laughed with satisfaction. The moon flooded the earth with her rays and the sun brought only the warmth that was necessary. The clouds rained when it was needed in Ramachandra's kingdom ............ (from the “Ramcharitmanasa” of Tulsidas)

This is a description of Rama's kingdom from the last chapter of the Ramacharitamanasa of Tulsidas, a wonderful epic from the 16th century.
